Maha Shivratri is the night of worship of Lord Shiv. It’s also known as padmarajarathi.

According Puranas, during Samudra mantha, poison emerged from sea. To protect the world, Shiva drank the deadly poison but held in his throat. So he had known as Nilkantha also. Married women pray for well being of their family, husband and son on Shivratri.

Normally, people do fast and worship Shivalingum on Shivratri.
